Siqura offers 5th gen technology perimeter intrusion detection

Within Siqura’s range of solutions, FenceGuard is a relative newcomer. However, the algorithm of this perimeter intrusion detection system originates in 2005 and is currently in its fifth generation of development. Roel Janssen, senior computer vision engineer, explains how Siqura ensures FenceGuard stays ahead of the competition.

In a company or industry environment, perimeter intrusion is a constant threat. One which can quickly result in dangerous scenarios of burglary, fire and so on. Valuable and hazardous materials are omni27present. Siqura has developed FenceGuard to meet clients’ demand for a perimeter intrusion detection (PID) solution to this challenge.

“What is special about FenceGuard, compared to solutions our colleagues in the business offer, is how comprehensive and versatile our system is”, says Roel Janssen. “As an embedded video content analysis (VCA) solution, it can operate inside one of our security cameras, night vision camera or on board of our video management system VDG Sense. It has a unique off-line configuration. In a few seconds, a client’s PID configuration can be tested against a whole day of its real-world images;  thus being optimized for the best performance with the lowest number of false alarms.”0527

In FenceGuard, lines and zones can be defined, as well as time parameters for what period of time a person can be in a zone, and alarms can be set accordingly. An alarm signal can be sent to a control center or incident room, but it is also possible to connect a camera relay to a mechanism sounding an alarm.

Long-distance intrusion detection

Earlier, Siqura has successfully introduced long-distance perimeter intrusion detection (PID) to the market. Now in place around the world with leading energy companies for protecting gas and oil pipelines, with a maximum distance between camera stations of about 2 km, this system can detect movement and activity on or along the pipeline.

Roel Janssen mentions the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 racing circuit as a good example where this long-distance solution performs very satisfactorily. Regarding FenceGuard, Siqura has recently delivered a comprehensive system to one of the three major banks in the Netherlands.

Minimizing false alarms is essential

“Crucial to the commercial success of FenceGuard is what we call detection quality”, Janssen continues. “The challenge is to have the lowest number of undesired alerts while still detecting what has to be detected. Presently, we operate at a level above i-LIDS. Imagery Library for Intelligent Detection Systems or i-LIDS is a test developed by the UK government and the strictest of its kind. Few systems pass the i-LIDS test. Siqura’s FenceGuard has not only passed it, but we have built upon it to reach an even higher standard.”

Recognizing objects as humans

“Passing i-LIDS means you are certified for primary sensing, i.e. a signal can be relayed to a control center without the need of having it verified by a person. Siqura is now actively developing a feature whereby moving objects can be individually ‘identified’ decisively as humans by the camera itself. This is the next big thing in our market”, Janssen concludes.
