Deutsche Glasfaser is a company that provides various states in Germany with ‘Fiber to the Home’. What’s so special, is that the company mainly concentrates on thinly populated areas, which are considered by other network providers as insignificant.
PoPs
PoPs – Points of Presence are spread across the areas to be served. These are kinds of distribution stations from which the individual glass fibres spread to homes and business premises. The Asset & Site Management Solution is being used to monitor these two hundred PoPs.
Key vs. card
Frank Merkel at Deutsche Glasfaser, who is responsible for the PoPs, talks about implementation of the electronic access control: “Keys get lost and, in the course of time, you have no idea who has the keys and when these were used. Cards for an electronic access control system can also get lost, but these can be deactivated remotely. That’s a lot easier. Furthermore, for projects we can issue key cards that are temporarily valid.”
Maintenance costs
Aside from Access Control, Asset & Site Management also controls the monitoring of ambient factors. In this way, it contributes to the reducing of the total maintenance costs of the glass fibre network. Merkel: “For example, we get a notification if the air-conditioning in a PoP consumes more power than normal. That could indicate the need for additional maintenance with which we could stay ahead of any defects.”
