Verkeerspost Terneuzen - Controlling Water Locks in Zeeland, NL

The Province of Zeeland, known for its abundant waterways, is managed from two centrally positioned control units. TKH Security supplied the video display and control solution for 22 locations, encompassing over 1,600 cameras.
Challenge
- Significant height differences (up to 6 meters) along waterways complicated navigation.
- 22 locks previously required local manual operation, consuming high manpower and time.
- Handling 70,000+ vessels annually demanded a more efficient, reliable system.
- Existing operations were fragmented, creating a need for centralized control and modernization.
Solution
Transitioning from local to remote control required significant technological advancements:
Camera Deployment and Video Quality:
- High video quality with true color representation under all conditions with over 70 cameras installed per location.
- Perfect camera positioning and image clarity thanks to rigorous testing.
Latency Management:
Our VDG SENSE VMS introduced a unique feature to address latency, critical for real-time operations.
- If latency exceeded 500 milliseconds, a red cross appeared on the video stream, alerting operators instantly.
Stream Orientation Feature:
- A blue border was added to video streams from cameras on the opposite side of locks, helping operators avoid confusion during operations.
SCADA Integration:
VDG SENSE VMS was integrated into SCADA, which also controls bridges and water locks and COMMEND Intercom and Marine Radio Communication were incorporated for seamless communication across sites.
Operational Safety:
- Operators were restricted to controlling one lock at a time for safety. Switching between locks required logging out of one system and logging into another.
- Camera views automatically updated to show relevant feeds based on operational requirements.
Backup Local Control:
- Local control remained available as a fallback during network disruptions or maintenance. The interface and functionality mirrored remote operations for consistency.
