The Florida Keys rely on a single highway as their vital link to the mainland. To enhance safety and visibility, the Florida Department of Transportation launched the COAST (Connecting Overseas to Advance Safe Travel) Project—providing a durable, cost-effective monitoring solution designed to meet FDOT’s high standards.
- Unstable Wireless Network – FDOT’s communications in Monroe County depend entirely on wireless connectivity. Limited bandwidth and inconsistent performance made reliable remote integration and testing extremely difficult.
- Operational Complexity – With network delays, every keystroke or system command became a potential point of failure, especially during subsystem and system tests.
- Harsh Environmental Conditions – Surrounded by saltwater and exposed to extreme heat, humidity, dust, and tropical storms, equipment needed to endure some of the harshest conditions in the U.S.
- Budget Discipline – FDOT required maximum coverage and safety enhancement while ensuring the project stayed within budget.
- Ease of Use & Network Efficiency – Our camera platform was selected for its intuitive GUI, which minimized keystrokes and streamlined testing. This was critical in a low bandwidth environment, where reducing input commands significantly lowered the risk of failure.
- Durability in Harsh Conditions – All deployed equipment was chosen specifically to resist salt exposure, high temperatures, dust, and storm conditions. This ensured continuous, reliable operation with reduced maintenance requirements.
